Solving Knee Pain

Not all knee pain comes from the knee! Here’s an example of a treatment protocol I use when pain in the knee originates from trigger points in 2 of the hamstring muscles; semi-membranosus and semi-tendinosus. These two muscles attach to the inside of the knee and when the muscle is super tight, it will pull on the knee creating “knee pain”. Something a little acupuncture and cupping can fix and easily!

Trigger Points and Knee Pain

Not all knee pain is an abnormality in the knee joint itself. This muscle I’m pointing to is called Vastus Medialis and it is one of the 4 quadricep muscles.  When a Trigger point develops in that muscle or what people often call it “a tight knot”, it pulls the muscle fibers together creating tension in where the muscle attaches which in this case, is the inside of the knee joint. This trigger point can also make it difficult to walk up stairs or it can manifest as a buckling knee.  So if you are experiencing knee pain and an X-ray or MRI indicates no diagnosis as to why there is pain, you’re quadricep muscle may be the culprit! And YES, acupuncture helps this in typically 2-5 treatments depending on multiple factors. In the comments I’ve put a photo of the muscles around the knee – the X’s indicate where the trigger point usually occurs to create knee tension and the red indicates where there is referring pain.

Gallbladder 34

Acupuncture point Gallbladder (GB) 34 is a point I use regularly, but I hardly explain WHY I do use it. Acupuncture point GB34 is an excellent and effective point that activates and harmonizes the Gallbladder meridian. The gallbladder meridian runs mostly along the side of the body. This acupuncture point is also called the influential point of tendons and sinews – which is a term describing the soft tissue that connects muscles to bone; which will have a systemic effect.  I use this acupuncture point a lot to treat shoulder pain and hip pain. But it’s very effective in treating rib cage pain and knee pain as well as headaches. In your next treatment if you notice I put a needle on the lateral side of your lower leg, this is why.
