Blood pressure headaches happen in the back of the h
ead, known as the occipital region. It can also make an already tight neck feel much more painful. Often it feels like all you need is to be cupped or needled in the neck and upper back…but that would only make it worse, because it would increase blood flow to the head. An acupuncturist knows this and will instead do mostly grounding points in the feet to alleviate the headache. This brings more blood flow down to the feet and away from the head, which brings relief. The feet points are called Ba Feng, which means the 8 Winds, which alludes to the way wind is a pathogenic force that can invade and damage the body in different ways. For example “internal wind” in Chinese medicine can damage the body, and a stroke is considered a form of internal wind.

How Acupuncture can regulate PMS symptoms
I first got my period when I was 12, while I was playing tennis with Colleen. My belly really really hurt and I bent over after missing a ball. We went to the bathroom and I felt both horror…bc blood…and oh thank god I’m normal….because other girls had gotten it at 10. I always thought it was normal to feel pain and grumpiness before my period and the first few days of it.
It was only when I was in Chinese medicine school that I learned of two terms: liver blood stagnation and blood deficiency. Liver blood stagnation means blood isn’t circulating well, and it’s understood this can cause frustration, headaches, and a number of symptoms. Blood deficiency is kindof like pre-anemia, it makes you weak and deficient. Once you get acupuncture for 3 months the PMS tends to stop because the body regulates itself a bit better. But there’s also a well known often used herbal formula for PMS and menstrual issues called Xiao Yao San.
Signs and symptoms:
– Irritability, depression, and moodinesss are:
– Fatigue, headache, and dizziness.
– Hypochondriac fullness or pain.
– Breast distention, irregular menstruation, and dysmenorrhea.
– Bitter taste in the mouth, dry mouth and throat, and poor appetite.
I now know that menstrual pain really isn’t necessary – it’s a sign of disharmony and it can be regulated with herbs and acupuncture usually within 3 months. Ask us how we can help!

Endometriosis Related Pelvic Pain

According to the Journal of American Society of Acupuncturists, Spring 2020 issue, in a systemic literature review to analyze the effectiveness of acupuncture for endometriosis related pelvic pain, in an analysis of 11 studies, with a total of 776 patients….the conclusion is that acupuncture shows effectiveness, is safe, and has fewer side effects than many pharmacological treatments. It is thus suggested that it should be used as a complimentary therapy for endometriosis related pelvic pain. Contact Acupuncture Nirvana: 518-409-6993. Gallbladder 34
Acupuncture point Gallbladder (GB) 34 is a point I use regularly, but I hardly explain WHY I do use it. Acupuncture point GB34 is an excellent and effective point that activates and harmonizes the Gallbladder meridian. The gallbladder meridian runs mostly along the side of the body. This acupuncture point is also called the influential point of tendons and sinews – which is a term describing the soft tissue that connects muscles to bone; which will have a systemic effect. I use this acupuncture point a lot to treat shoulder pain and hip pain. But it’s very effective in treating rib cage pain and knee pain as well as headaches. In your next treatment if you notice I put a needle on the lateral side of your lower leg, this is why.

Sneaking in Kale into Family Meals
Sneaking in kale: A little weekend cooking inspiration! If your family is tired of egg muffins or boiled eggs, these are great alternatives and they allow you to sneak some kale into your family’s diet.
Spraying olive oil into a muffin tin, take 5 boiled and shredded potatoes, combine w 2 eggs and salt, pepper and garlic (or buy frozen hash browns in the store to do a faster version) and mold them like mini pie crusts into each muffin tin. Bake at 350 until brown. Broil at low heat until middle and tops are brown. Spray a plain pan w olive oil. Then take them out using a spoon and put on pan. Fill w goat cheese and top with kale mixture (kale is made by lightly sautéing kale greens, garlic, cumin, salt and pepper). Bake again at 350, being sure that kale doesn’t get burnt.
Viola! It makes a nice breakfast or you could serve one warmed up with salad greens for dinner.
